10 PhD Fellowships International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) Due to generous support from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the GCSC invites applications for up to 10 PhD fellowships. PhD candidates seeking an excellent research environment will find ideal conditions and maximum support at the GCSC, which was awarded the status of a ‘DFG - Graduate School of Germany’s Excellence Initiative’ in 2006. The PhD fellowships include a monthly stipend of approximately €1.000 and are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of a year. The fellowships commence on October 1st, 2008. Fellows are required to participate in the study programme and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, and expected to get involved in the relevant GCSC graduate research areas. Fellowship holders must be registered as PhD students at Justus Liebig University, and are expected to take up residence in or near Giessen. PhD supervisors from among the GCSC faculty may be chosen by the applicants before or after their admission. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per semester. The GCSC encourages applicants who have graduated with excellent marks from their home universities in one of the GCSC’s academic subjects* or in the arts/humanities, cultural studies or social sciences. The proposed research project should fit into one of the GCSC’s research areas*. Candidates must be fluent in either English or German. Proposals should include a brief abstract summing up your aims and methods, sketch the guiding questions of your project while embedding them in the current academic debate, and show that the dissertation will make an innovative and important contribution to the field.
